Data Center (DC)

A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and security devices.

Data Center (DC) of St. Petersburg State University  was built in accordance with the requirements of TIA-942. DC is designed to accommodate the server and high-performance computing equipment necessary for the educational process and performing of research works.

The data center is located on the first floor of corps “K” of St. Petersburg State University (building of Scientific-Research Institute of Physics (SRIP)) in rooms 103-106. Also used the room 33 on the ground floor of the building and technological sites next to it and on the SRIP’s roof to place maintenance of equipment.

Technological characteristics of the data center

  1. The total usable area of data center premises for the installation of computer equipment and power system is about 120 square meters
  2. The area of Climatic Air Conditioning installation is about 17.7 square meters.
  3. The total number of installed cabinets is 28 pcs.
  4. Number of server cabinets size 600 x 1000 mm and a height of 42U is 26 pcs.
  5. Number of server cabinets size 800 x 1000 mm and a height of 42U is 2 pcs.
  6. Of the total number cabinets - 20 cases with energy consumption of 12 kW each and eight cabinets to 5 KW each.
  7. The data center premises are built on the technology of protective modular space. The walls and ceiling are made of sandwich panels, the basic floor is made by self-leveling method with waterproofing . Fire resistance of the premises is provided within EI60 structural materials. The premises is protected from water leaks from the heating and sanitation, as well as flooding from the bottom. The design of the premises provides electromagnetic protection.
  8. Raised floor of the premises provides a distributed load and can withstand 1450 kg per square meter when floor height of 500 mm. The supports of the false floor are special supporting stanchion (pedestal). Raised floor is equipped with a ramp for load / upload equipment and 2 stairs at the service and technology entrances.
  9. Total energy consumption (excess heat) of the entire cabinet equipment, without heat generated by other equipment is 280 kW.
  10. Heat dissipation from the UPS with parallel operation of UPS is 24 kW.
  11. Total refrigeration capacity of precision air conditioners for server equipment is 21.8 kW when the redundancy is performed for each row by scheme N+1 . Heat from the UPS is removed by 3 precision air conditioners with full refrigerating capacity 13.4 kW when the redundancy is performed at the system- level by scheme N +1
  12. Refrigeration supply system is made using 2-chillers with N +1 redundancy and refrigerating capacity of 360 kW each installed on the roof of the building.
  13. Data center designed for continuous three-shift work of systems installed in it. The work of the data center is defined by the formula 24 hours x 7 days a week x 365 days a year.

Electricity supply system of DC

Electricity supply system of DC is a complex system that provides the data center with reliable power supply using backup guaranteed and uninterrupted power supply subsystems. Uninterruptible power system is based on VFI UPS (Voltage Frequency Independent Uninterruptible power supplies). Parallel connection of 3 UPS is used on basis of PRA (Redundant Parallel Architecture) with capacity of 200 KVA / 180 Kw ensuring offline time of 20 minutes (in event of AC power loss). There are three battery cabinets with capacity of 2-154A each and battery life of 10 years.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

 

For guaranteed power supply data center uses diesel-electric generator set as a source of backup power to ensure work continuity of data center. Rated Power – 801 KVA / 640 Kw, Standby Power 860 KVA / 688 Kw. Work offline of the system is 20 hours. Diesel-electric generator set is established on the automotive platform in the container and is located on a site next to the SRIP. Total electrical load of the data center with the backup of technological equipment is 665, 33 kW.

Ventilation and conditioning systems

Ventilation and conditioning systems includes:

  1. ventilation & exhaust units (equipment of Systemair company);
  2. subsystem of removing the combustion products from the premises;
  3. system of in-the-row conditioners with full refrigerating capacity 24 kW (equipment of Conteg company);
  4. monoblock precision air conditioners with refrigerating capacity 13.4 / 12.6 kW (equipment of Montair company);
  5. air cooler - chiller with free cooling function (equipment of Clint company);

This equipment has been chosen because of its proven reliability in similar facilities, the possibility of its year-round use, the European assembly, and testing. To increase reliability of the engineering infrastructure solution redundancy scheme of conditioning system is applied using the "N+1" formula. In addition, the redundancy of main pump group is provided. Thus: ventilation and air conditioning provides redundancy, meeting the Uptime Institute Tier III recommendations on the reliability of engineering infrastructure.

Structured Cable Network

Structured Cable Network of data center is based on the provisions of the standard ANSI/TIA/EIA-942 «Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers», the requirements and recommendations of which, to date, are the basis for creating data transmission network to a data center in Russia.

SCN is made of two parts: the optical and copper part of the system. The optical part is based on single-mode optical cable OS1, and copper part - on unshielded twisted pair of category 6 UTP. A total of 24 single-mode optical cable and 16 "copper" (6 UTP) cable run from switching center to each cabinet. Switching centers with patch panels are organized in the two 800х1000 42U cabinets.

 

Automatic fire-extinguishing and fire alarm

Automatic fire-extinguishing (AFE) is designed to:

  • fire detection;
  • warning of fire;
  • fire-extinguishing while receiving the signal "Fire" from 2 fire alarms;
  • Signaling about system operation and its status.

  • fire detection;
  • warning of fire;
  • signaling about system operation and its status.

Fire-extinguishing and fire alarm system covers room № 102 (server room), № 104 (server room), № 33 (auxiliary facilities). In AFE as an extinguishing agent Novec 1230 is used. Extinguishing agent is is storage in modules gas fire extinguishing IPA-NVC1230.

The basic AFE equipment include:

  • gas fire extinguishing modules IPA-NVC1230;
  • distribution pipelines;
  • nozzle - spray;
  • pressure indicator.

In accordance with the set of rules 5.131130 - 2009 "Installation of fire alarm and fire extinguishing" is performed following algorithm of fire-extinguishing in the premises:

  • At the entrance the staff (identification by scanners and access control systems) in the room is performed the blocking of automatic starting system;
  • System is moved to a manual start and locked, while launch of extinguishing agents to the premises impossible;
  • When leaving the room (on a signal from the access control system), the system automatically becomes the fire protection facilities.

Mandatory requirement for the staff - in / out in the server room and data center must be performed man by man with a mandatory identification in the system ACS.

Video surveillance system

Video surveillance system is based on the network cameras produced by Axis company. With them premises and equipment are observed. Information from all cameras comes to a single security control board. At the giving below pictures you can see the types of cameras that are used in our data center.

Security alarm and access control systems is made on equipment of the company Bolide. The doors of data center are equipped with proximity card readers for in / out. As well the door to the technology room of ground floor is equiped with such reader for enter and "Exit" button.
