Exciton binding energy in the GaAs-like quantum wells is theoretically modeled as a function of a quantum well thickness. Results of exact numerical calculations are compared with the standard approach based on the energy functional minimisation method. Remarkable difference is found for the narrow quantum wells. Effect of the mass and dielectric constant mismatch on the binding energy is discussed.
